In 2002, the Ann Arbor Police Department had 191 sworn officers. Last year we had 122. Now your city officials plan to reduce this down to 109 sworn officers. In that time, the City has paid active officers to take early retirement. That's right, we paid them not to work. The staffing levels currently in force are substantially lower than nationally accepted standards for police protection. Yet, the City intends to make further cuts next budget year.
